Three EMCs, a city utility and Georgia Power all serve parts of Monroe County. Forsyth runs its own system in town, and outside it Georgia Power, Central Georgia EMC, Flint Energies and Southern Rivers Energy divide the countryside, each with reconnection paperwork that is not interchangeable. Permits come from Forsyth inside the city and from the county for Bolingbroke, Juliette, High Falls and other unincorporated areas. Roofs range from older frame houses near the Forsyth square to brick ranches along the interstate exits and larger houses on wooded tracts toward Bolingbroke. Plant Scherer, the big coal plant near Juliette, is the county's best-known landmark, but for a rooftop array the hazards are ordinary ones: spring hail, summer thunderstorms and oaks that keep growing over the south side of the house.
