Solar panel removal, reinstall & repair in North Port, FL

Most of North Port's hundred-plus square miles was platted into small lots by General Development. Ian flooded large parts of the city in 2022, and plenty of homes there have new roofs since, some with arrays that had to come off first.

Permits, power and roofs in North Port

North Port incorporated in 1959 with only a handful of residents, most of them General Development staff. Houses now range from 1980s block homes to brand-new construction in Wellen Park, the large planned community growing on the west side. The city's building division handles permits for all of it, and FPL supplies power. Ian brought flooding along the Myakkahatchee Creek and the Myakka River, and the Holiday Park manufactured home community was almost destroyed. Wind damage triggered a wave of re-roofs. Inland, salt is a minor factor, but summer storms, lightning and fast-growing pines and oaks are not.

Near the Myakkahatchee Creek and the older neighborhoods off Price Boulevard, many owners are on their first roof replacement and learning the array has to come off. In Wellen Park and other new streets, systems are young and the trouble is usually a builder or installer that has moved on. Flood-repaired homes sometimes lost the original solar paperwork.

FAQ

North Port: questions homeowners ask

Do you work in North Port?

Yes, as planned travel work. North Port is outside our weekly Orlando to Miami run, so jobs here are booked ahead and grouped with others in Southwest Florida, and the drive is priced into the written quote rather than added later.

Who can pull the permit to reinstall solar in North Port?

Only a licensed solar or electrical contractor, because a roofing license does not cover it. The reinstall usually needs its own permit and inspection through Sarasota County or the city, depending on the address.

Who reconnects the system in North Port?

Homes in North Port are generally served by FPL. When an array goes back on after a roof job the utility usually needs to know, and the building department normally inspects the reinstall before the system is switched back on.

My installer went out of business. Can the system still be fixed?

Usually. The installer's own workmanship warranty is gone, but the panels, inverter and optimizers carry manufacturer warranties that normally still apply, and a dead system is often one failed part rather than a worn-out array.
