Miami-Dade County · Florida
South Miami became the first Florida city to require solar panels on new homes, in 2017. The rule was written to cover new houses and some large renovations, so arrays here sit on a mix of brand-new homes and 1920s to 1960s houses whose owners added panels by choice.

On the ground in South Miami
The 2017 ordinance passed on a 4 to 1 vote and took effect that September, so the city's building department has been processing solar permits on new houses for years. FPL is the utility. The older housing is varied: Cambridge Lawns, near the University of Miami, has Tudor Revival and Mediterranean Revival homes from around 1928, with steep gables on the Tudor houses and barrel tile on the Mediterranean ones, while the postwar streets are mostly single-story block ranches with low tile roofs. Steep historic roofs take more care and more time to work on than the ranches. Large banyans, oaks and royal poincianas shade many lots. Miami-Dade's hurricane-zone attachment rules apply throughout, and Hurricane Andrew's 1992 damage reached the city as well.
In Cambridge Lawns, owners' preferences, and historic-district rules where they apply, push arrays toward roof faces hidden from the street, which limits the usable area on an older house. On the ranch streets off Sunset Drive, the common situation is a 1950s or 1960s house with a tile roof due for replacement and a system installed in the 2010s. New houses built under the 2017 rule carry young arrays, and their questions are about monitoring and warranty, not the roof.

FAQ
Yes, every week. South Miami is on our Orlando to Miami route, so it is normal scheduling with no travel charge, and the reinstall is lined up with your roofer's tear-off date.
Only a licensed solar or electrical contractor. South Miami is inside Florida's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so every attachment needs documented product approval and the reinstall is inspected before the system comes back on.
Homes in South Miami are generally served by FPL. When an array goes back on after a roof job the utility usually needs to know, and the building department normally inspects the reinstall before the system is switched back on.
Usually. The installer's own workmanship warranty is gone, but the panels, inverter and optimizers carry manufacturer warranties that normally still apply, and a dead system is often one failed part rather than a worn-out array.

The address, roughly how many panels, who installed them if you know, and what is happening. A photo of the array from the street and one of the inverter get you an accurate number fastest, and texting them is the quickest way to send them.
